Our Staggered team designed and installed bespoke protective canopy structures that improve animal welfare and create safer, more comfortable environments. One of our recent projects was at the Cats Protection Centre in Bredhurst, Kent, where we were asked to solve long-standing issues affecting the cats’ outdoor pens.
The Challenge: Sun, Debris & Noise Disturbance
The pens at Cats Protection Bredhurst were exposed to direct sunlight, which caused overheating during the summer months and made conditions uncomfortable for the cats. In addition, the pens were located beneath mature trees, meaning acorns, branches, and debris frequently fell onto the roofs. This not only created maintenance problems but also caused loud noises that frightened the cats and increased stress levels.
Our Solution: A Freestanding Roof Canopy System
To resolve these challenges, our team designed and installed a freestanding canopy system, completely separate from the existing pen structures.
This approach ensured:
Temperature control – providing shade to keep the pens cooler in hot weather
Noise reduction – preventing falling acorns and debris from hitting the pen roofs directly
Improved protection – extending the lifespan of the existing structures by shielding them from weather and falling objects
Animal welfare benefits – creating a calmer, quieter, and more secure environment for the cats.
Precision Engineering & Installation
The canopies were manufactured to measure, using a durable steel framework with robust fixings to ensure longevity and stability. The installation was carefully carried out on-site to minimise disruption to the day-to-day running of the centre.
The result is a low-maintenance, highly effective protective roofing system that blends seamlessly into the environment while dramatically improving the comfort and wellbeing of the cats in care.
